Apple Maps started displaying advertisements to users this week, following the company’s announcement in March 2026 that it would allow businesses to pay for prominent placement within the app.
The ads are appearing as the first entry in the “suggested places” section during searches, and Apple says they will also appear at the top of search results. According to 9to5Mac, the rollout began this week, with more users in the US and Canada expected to see them over the coming weeks.
The ads are labeled with a blue “ad” icon, similar to how Google marks paid placements in its own Maps app. Users are also being greeted with a pop-up notification when opening Apple Maps that explains the new feature: “Maps may show local ads based on your approximate location, current search terms, or view of the map while you search. For your privacy, advertising information is not linked to your Apple Account.”
Apple has emphasized the privacy aspects of the ad system. The company stated in its March announcement that “a user’s location and the ads they see and interact with in Maps are not associated with a user’s Apple Account. Personal data stays on a user’s device, is not collected or stored by Apple, and is not shared with third parties.”
For iPhone users who rely on Apple Maps for local search, the change means paid business listings may now appear above organic results — a shift that could influence which businesses are most visible when searching for nearby places.
