PeopleFinders, the online data broker behind PeopleFinders.com, launched a new platform in August 2026 called Stud or Dud, designed to let users run background checks on potential romantic partners in the US.
The site aggregates courthouse documents, bankruptcy filings, tax liens, pre-foreclosure data, phone directories, and social media posts to generate a profile of a person. Users need only a name or phone number to initiate a search. Results are organized into four categories — finances, property or assets, employment history, and criminal background — and each report includes an AI-generated overview. The platform also flags what it characterizes as red or green flags, such as criminal records or sex offender registry listings, and offers an AI assistant called “the dating detective” for first-date tips and general advice.
Stud or Dud requires a subscription and draws on the same public records infrastructure as PeopleFinders.com, which the company says has historically been used for online dating safety. CEO Amber Higgins framed the tool as a supplement to dating apps rather than a replacement for the getting-to-know-you process. “This is meant to confirm your trust about a dating profile,” Higgins said, adding that users should treat it as a “sidekick” to existing platforms.
Higgins acknowledged that flagged information — such as a DUI or prior eviction — should not automatically disqualify a match. “We give enough information for the user to determine, is that really a red flag for them or not?” she said.
The launch comes amid documented risks in online dating. According to the FBI, romance scams cost San Francisco daters more than $40 million in 2025 alone. However, the source notes that the platform assumes the person running the search is the one at risk, which may not always be the case — raising the possibility that bad actors could exploit the same information the tool provides.
